Urzila Carlson

URZILA CARLSON is a Multi-award-winning South African-New Zealander, and has become one of the biggest names in comedy in Australia and New Zealand.

A television favourite in both countries, Urzila is a much-loved series regular on both the Australian and New Zealand versions of the award-winning comedy panel show Have You Been Paying Attention? Her trademark deadpan humour and cheeky wit has seen her win fans the world over for her television appearances and live shows. Urzila’s fascinating autobiography Rolling With the Punchlines, which added best-selling author to her ever-growing list of achievements, including sold out shows across the UK, Australia, New Zealand.

In 2019, Urzila became the highest-selling comedian in the 33-year long history of The Melbourne International Comedy Festival, one of the three largest comedy festivals in the world. She also took home the coveted People’s Choice Award  the same year and made her Netflix debut as part of the streaming service’s unprecedented world-wide comedy series.

In 2020, Urzila joined the dynamic panel of The Masked Singer Australia and released her standalone one hour Netflix stand-up special Overqualified Loser, which was recorded live in December 2019 and released in 190 countries. 2020-2023 saw more tours, a return to another series of the Masked Singer and more People’s choice awards.

Looking ahead to 2024, Urzila is poised to make her mark in the realm of feature animation by lending her voice to the character Honkus in the animated film Ozi. This exciting project boasts a star-studded cast, including Donald Sutherland, Laura Dern, Ru Paul, and Amandla Stenberg.

1. What’s your biggest achievement / Something you’re proud of yourself for?

Having the courage to immigrate and start over in my 30’s (this is of course if we don’t include having kids, a successful career and flossing daily).”

2. What’s your biggest fear / something that holds you back?

“Heights – it’s hard to soar with eagles or reach for them starts when you’re petrified of heights! In all seriousness though my biggest fear would have to be not turning the iron off when I leave the house. Just kidding I don’t iron.”

3. What’s your biggest contribution / Something you like to share?

“It will have to be my job. I’m in the lucky position to have the best job in the world where I get to share jokes with people.”
