Q&A

1. What’s your biggest achievement / Something you’re proud of yourself for?

“Writing my first book, The Yoga of Parenting, has been my biggest career achievement so far. I know most people would say their children, but I don’t really see my children as “my” achievement. They are guests who I have the privilege of caring for and getting to spend time with, and while it’s mind blowing that the human body can make a whole other human, I don’t really see them as something I “achieved.” I did however work my bum off to get to a stable place with my eating disorder and alcohol and drugs and workaholism to get my body healthy enough so I could have kids. That feels like a huge accomplishment. I have also devoted my life to trying to live intentionally and consciously, though I’m a human with a quick to anger response system, so I definitely haven’t “achieved”  total equanimity (yes, even as a yoga teacher), but I’m definitely proud of my efforts and commitment.

2. What’s your biggest fear / something that holds you back?

“I have generalized anxiety, so my fear isn’t always identifiable. It’s an underlying feeling of dread, like someone close to you is mad at you or you left the stove on. It has gotten so extreme at certain points in my life that I’ve needed more help, like when I had postpartum anxiety after my first son. But the thing that holds me back is less the anxiety itself and more the self doubt that accompanies it. It’s the feelings of “who am I to deserve xyz” and “nobody loves me” and “please love me” all of which can get exhausting.”

3. What’s your biggest contribution / Something you like to share?

“I wouldn’t say I have one huge contribution. LIke, I didn’t fund a building or start a charity, but every time I share some of my thoughts and personal story and someone else feels seen and heard, I feel like I have made a difference. We go through this world feeling so alone and separate, but when we strip it down and get real, we see that many people have felt exactly as we have. Community is one of the most healing elements to humans. I love to facilitate that it anyway I can, whether through my writing or yoga classes.”
