MUSIC THERAPIST
Emma Oelschig is music therapist based in Cape Town South Africa. Starting with violin studies at the University of Cape Town’s Music School, she discovered that her true calling wasn’t in performance, but in using music to support others’ wellbeing.
This realisation led Emma to pursue a Bachelor of Social Science at UCT, majoring in Psychology and Philosophy, deepening her understanding of human experience and confirmed a desire to work directly with people in a meaningful way.
Then with an undergraduate degree, she completed her Honours in Psychology at the South African College of Applied Psychology, further developing a clinical foundation. Finally Emma completed her Master’s in Music Therapy where she found the perfect integration of musical training and passion for supporting others, transforming her musical abilities into a therapeutic tool for growth and healing.
Q&A
1. What’s your biggest achievement / Something you’re proud of yourself for?
“My biggest achievement is earning my master’s degree in music therapy. It was an incredibly challenging journey – the dissertation alone pushed me to my limits and became the defining accomplishment of my life. There were countless hours of work and many moments of doubt. There were times I genuinely didn’t think I would make it to the finish line. But completing the entire program within the two-year timeframe was such an incredible milestone. It represents not just academic success, but proof of my resilience and determination to pursue something I’m truly passionate about.”
2. What’s your biggest fear / something that holds you back?
“Like so many of us, I struggle with the fear of failure – that nagging worry about not succeeding as much as I’d like to. But I’ve learned something important: when we operate from a place of fear, we actually guarantee the very outcome we’re trying to avoid. Instead, I consciously choose to work from a foundation of abundance, faith, and genuine belief in myself. This mindset shift alone has become one of my most powerful tools for moving forward and reaching my goals.”
3. What’s your biggest contribution / Something you like to share?
“Through my work in music therapy, I get to witness the incredible healing power of music every day. My biggest contribution is helping people discover that music isn’t just entertainment – it’s a pathway to emotional healing, self-expression, and connection. I combine music therapy with mindfulness practices to create safe spaces where people can process difficult emotions, build confidence, and find their voice. Whether it’s helping someone work through trauma, supporting a child with developmental challenges, or guiding adults through life transitions, I’m passionate about showing others how music can be a bridge to their own inner strength and healing.”
